If you’ve stopped by my Vitamix booth of late, you’ve heard me talk about ways to take your green smoothie to the next nutritional level by adding avocado seeds. Of course when I make the suggestion of throwing the pit into the smoothie, the looks on the faces of the crowd turn from amazement (’cause it’s an awesome blender!) to incredulous (is the seed even edible?). It’s one thing to blend up kale, it’s an entirely different matter to blend up a seed the size of an apricot! While it may seem strange to the western world that embraces neon colored pills from the pharmacy that plants can be used as medicine, cultures from around the world have used traditional medicines of plants, herbs, and seeds for centuries.
So what is it about these seeds that are so nutritious in the first place? Avocado pits are rich in antioxidants just like the fruit. Antioxidants help prevent cell damage or oxidation, and build up the immune system. The pit also includes fatty acids, in this case “good” fats that increase your metabolism, and sterols. Plant sterols look like cholesterol in the body. When they travel through the digestive tract they “block” the real cholesterol from being absorbed into the blood stream. This causes the cholesterol to be removed from the body through our waste. The avocado seed also has more soluble fiber than most any other food! Soluble fiber binds to fat and excess cholesterol. In essence, the benefits of the avocado seed include: lowering cholesterol, preventing cardiovascular disease, and reducing blood pressure.
Here’s a short list of illneses that avocado seed has been used to treat around the world:
- Muscle pain
- Liver and Kidney problems
- Inflammatory diseases of the GI tract
- Lowering cholesterol & blood pressure
- Mycosis (skin fungus that can become cancerous)
I meet people almost daily who have diabetes or who are pre-diabetic. I would like to explain a little more in depth of how avocado seed can help those with this lifestyle disease. The high soluble fiber reduces blood sugar levels by slowing the absorbtion of glucose (sugar), improves blood circulation by pulling out the fatty deposits in the circulatory system, and improves the function of the Pancreas which is the organ that produces insulin. Of course a diet high in fiber, proteins (I prefer plant or legumes), and exercise is the best way to prevent or reverse diabetes.*
Avocado seed is also used to make soaps and beauty products. I’m not that adventurous yet! For now, I’m sticking to adding the seed into my smoothines at least a few times a week.
